TV, Movies, Music...Books anyone? Remember those, those paper things?

While I love my shows, I try to do just as much reading in my fave genres as well. I hope you all do the same and i would love to hear from top show fans what their fave books are as well. I for one, just finished reading an advance copy of David Baldacci's latest book called Stone Cold. It's the Ocean's Eleven of mystery/thrillers. I absolutely loved it!! For those of you that are familiar with his work, I think this is by far his best book yet. I especially think it will be liked by all of you 24 lovers! wink
Here's a brief summary of the book (NO SPOILERS!): The book is a follow-up to the best-sellers The Collectors and Simple Genius.
Once again the mysterious vigilante group, The Camel Club, have charged themselves with the dubious task of keeping a watchful eye
on our country's top officials. The group, headed up by the entrancing Oliver Stone, finds that it has made powerful enemies among
the highest ranks in Washington, D.C., who will do anything to prevent them from uncovering the hidden, secret work of the government.
The newest addition, Annabelle Conroy, has just swindled $40 million from casino magnate Jerry Bagger, the man responsible for her
mother's death. The Club bands together to protect Annabelle, when a more dangerous enemy emerges: Harry Finn, a top official
secretly charged with keeping our nation safe turns out to be the most menacing opponent that The Camel Club has yet to come
across. In famous Baldacci style, the twists and turns lead to an explosive and devastating ending that will change The Camel
Club forever. I would love some recommendations from the 24, CSI, Law & Order, Prison Break, House etc. lovers out there. I'm always
looking for a good book.
Here's a link to the book: http://www.amazon.com/Stone-Cold-David-Baldacci/dp/0446577391/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-5454889-8804160?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1192457642&sr=1-1

Hey, i love the idea of the book stuff, kuz even though i'm like a ton younger than all of the rest of you, I'm sure i've read enough books in my life.  I have some suggestions of great books for all of you book lovers.

Dee Henderson, she's a Christian auther but she writes a lot of books that are kinda like 24.  she's really good!  A good book is Before I wake, and all the O'Malley Series books are good to.

Also, Libba Bray, She is GREAT!!!! like, my fav books of all time!!!  Her Great and Terrible Beauty trilogy is SO GOOD i totally recomend them, even tho they are not like 24 at all!!!!!!!(lol)

Also, the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer are super good, again nothing like 24, but really good.  They are comming out with a movie and I am super excited to tell you all that Sarah Clarke(Nina Meyers (lol weird coincidence!))  so i am like super pumped for that and totally recomend the movie and books, (even though i havn't seen the movie)

Re: TV, Movies, Music...Books anyone? Remember those, those paper things?

hey, hey, yeah, books still do exist! it's nice that people still read. still you guys keep talking about books and about 24, have you read the 24 books? you know, the 24: Declassified series? there's probably 9 books so far, each written by one of the following: Marc Cerasini, John Whitman or a guy named David Jacobs (whose book I personally did not like...). just thought that, since you're into paperbacks, you might wanna know about these, too wink

Re: TV, Movies, Music...Books anyone? Remember those, those paper things?

some of them are quite decent, others are so-so, and one I wouldn't recommend. personally, I like Marc Cerasini's books the most, because - apart from being a good writer, he's a Tony fan, and includes Tony in his storylines and respects the character. John Whitman's books are ok, but he usually keeps Tony out, and sometimes his portrayal of the 24 characters isn't quite true to the TV characters themselves. Then, the last writer, David Jacobs, well, I personally thought the book was bad and boring, so I wouldn't recommend it. Not only was there no Tony but Jack's storyline pretty much bored the hell out of me, cause he was sitting around waiting for most of the time, and Jacobs insisted on telling us certain things several dozen times when once would have been enough. and somehow the collection of characters seemed like a 24 parade (I think he pretty much got everyone around just cause he could). too much sometimes just kills things.

in general, the books were meant to all take place prior to season 1, so in some of them, you'll find Nina and Jamey working for CTU and that will be a bit of a strange feeling, since we know what we know about them now. I'm saying they were meant to, cause some books clearly take place after 9/11, which was after season 1. Also, since Tony and Michelle haven't met, there are no Tony and Michelle at all. And a certain character from season 5 whom I won't mention here appears in one or two books as a guy working for CTU, too, and somehow, that sends my skin crawling.

but if you're open for some fun and some extra 24 material, then go ahead and check them out. the first book was

Operation Hell Gate by Marc Cerasini. I found it very good, so give it a try smile

p.s. I think we had a thread on these books somewhere here, I'll go check and post a link if I find it.

Is it bad I still haven't managed to read any of them yet? I've got Trojan Horse, but it's at the bottom of a very big pile that I never have time to lessen.

stevie, I do recomment starting with Operation Hellgate, since, although the books are independent stories, they do take place one after another, so there are references. however, if I do remember correctly, Trojan Horse is one of the best books, and features a Tony storyline down in mexico big_smile. so yeah, read it anyway wink big_smile

btw, dan hasn't managed to read any either, so at least you're in good company wink.

I made MFL read one of the books when I was up there in Finland with her cause it contained a good Tony storyline. big_smile

Basically Dan we're being told off again. It'll be like the business with the fanfics all over. *sigh* what are we to do! ;-)

Ah, being told off on my own website, there ought to be a law, still if some public(online) scolding of me helps to provide a topic of discussion for the forum, fair enough.

J_A you know I'm only joking. wink

As for the fanfic, I am still writing it sporadically, it'll definitely be here before season seven (hopefully). It's an absence of free time combined with a need for work that's been the lmiting factor.

Back on-topic because we should surely be the ones setting that particular example (and yes I know it was my fault we went off it) I'm currently reading the third in the Mortal Engines series by Phillip Reeve. A really good series with a slightly bizarre social commentary.

Re: TV, Movies, Music...Books anyone? Remember those, those paper things?

The season seven fic. Lost Hours became a bit bogged down in it's own continuity so I put it aside for a while. Moved house and lost all my notes on it, which was a nuisance to say the least.

As for Mortal Engines, it's set a long way in the future in a time when cities move around on wheels devouring other smaller cities and making use of their resources. As the books go on a war starts between people who live on these cities and people who believe that settlements should be static.

Re: TV, Movies, Music...Books anyone? Remember those, those paper things?

hm, ok, i had to think about this before replying. I was going to say that it seems a little bit retro, the idea of moving cities when man has actually overcome being a nomad and settled down a long, long time ago.

but then again, thinking from today's perspective, I suppose if we do keep destroying the world, then at some point in far future, cities that want to survive might need to start moving again. wink. of course, I see struggle for the power and conflicts arising from the scenario and hence it sounds rather interesting from that POV. although I'm not much of a SciFi person - well, apart from the obvious X files thing wink.

so, how many books are there in that series?
