Blu Ray/HD DVD Anyone got it?

So has anyone taken the plunge yet and bought Blu ray or hd-dvd players, i suppose they will become more common now that hdtv and ps3/360 plays high definition, but for me i feel that dvd is far from dieing, i love my dvd collection and to now have 2 new formats, it feels like kind of a rip off, i dont think their is anything but 24 coming out on blu ray that would make me buy it.

Re: Blu Ray/HD DVD Anyone got it?

It's clear to me that only one of Blu-ray and HD DVD can survive long term, until that is decided i'm staying well away. I can't afford to buy one only for the other to be declared the winner.

thats exactly what im waiting for, if i bought a hd dvd and spent money and then realised it wouldn't be supported then i would be less than happy, i think that whithin a year a winner of the hd war will be revealed, till then like you dan, im waiting.

Re: Blu Ray/HD DVD Anyone got it?

I own a Sony PlayStation 3 and do own a couple of movies on Blu Ray that can be played on the console (X-Men: The Last Stand and Casino Royale), so technically I have already taken the plunge.

In my opinion Blu Ray is definitely going to win in the long term against HD-DVD simply because of the fact that the Sony PlayStation 3 can play the format staright out of the box whereas the Microsoft Xbox 360 needs an attachment to be able to play HD-DVD.

I think also with the massive studio backing that Blu-ray has, the battle has been fought and won, HD-DVD is dead, they just won't admit it yet.

Being 100% honest I think that you're exactly right.

The final nail in HD-DVD coffin, Wal Mart will shortly only be selling Blu-ray in it's 4,000 stores across america.

Re: Blu Ray/HD DVD Anyone got it?

HD DVD is now officially dead, The company behind it Toshiba, has today announced that it will stop all promotion immediately and will be stopping all manufacturing by the end of March.

It's over, it's now safe to buy a blu-ray player and not feel as if you might be wasting your money.

Re: Blu Ray/HD DVD Anyone got it?

Anyone care to venture a guess as to when Blu-ray will overtake DVD as the most popular format?

My guess is around 5 years, when the next lot of video games consoles are being released... it just seems logical.

Re: Blu Ray/HD DVD Anyone got it?

Hmm, interesting, My guess is 3 and half to 4 years. I reckon christmas 2011 will be when people will start heavily investing in HD equipment in general for the summer 2012 when everyone in the UK will be switched over to digital TV.

Re: Blu Ray/HD DVD Anyone got it?

i think about 5 years, dvd doesn't show any signs of slowing down, actually, completely the opposite. Its because of the war and not everyone has a hd tv, but it will catch on when more people replace there televisions.
