Re: Summer Blockbusters

I went to see Die Hard 4.0, i really liked it, and the soundtrack was very good, it is a die hard movie, it may have some updated technology to power the effects but its still got the McClane humour.

Re: Summer Blockbusters

Have to agree. I watched it this afternoon and think it was superb. Although that was in so bad it's good kind of way.

Re: Summer Blockbusters

Just got back to see it, I dragged my brother along (he's got a bad back and it hurts to sit down for too long), and we both really liked it. Very good, though i'm still hoping that Bourne 3 tops it.

Re: Summer Blockbusters

i really enjoyed it, but to be honest i dont think Bourne Ultimatum will beat it, they are two different types of films really, one is a thriller, the other is a witty action film.

Re: Summer Blockbusters

To be honest I just mean overall, because so far Die Hard is my favourite film of the summer, but i do expect that crown to eventually go to Bourne.

Re: Summer Blockbusters

oh, ok, yeah it may be true, anyways, i got back from the cinema about an hour ago, went to see the new Harry Potter movie, it was very good, i love how they keep getting better and darker. I like how it is growing along with the audience.

I thought that the plot was awesome. It can really happen and that's sorta scary you know? I haven't seen the past ones yet, I hope to see it soon though!:D So far Live Free or Die Hard has been my favorite summer film... Haven't seen Harry Potter 5 yet or some other ones like Transformers. By the way, has anyone seen Transformers yet? And can anyone tell me how they liked/disliked the film?

Re: Summer Blockbusters

I haven't seen transformers yet, but my guess is the plot will be pretty much rubbish, but the action will  be awesome.

Re: Summer Blockbusters

The plot does sound rubbish and there looks like there is some cheesy stupid bits in it BUT as you say Dan, the action will be awesome.

Saw Die hard 4.0 last night, very cool.
Some bits were alittle too far, but it was to be expected.
Dialogue, bad, but again it doesnt try to be something its not.
John Mclane, cheesy lines, killing and destroying everything in sight oh and maggie Q as a baddie :-)

Re: Summer Blockbusters

Just went to see Transformers. I'm still not really sure what I think of it, once the robots appeared things picked up and it became a really good action film. However, the dialogue was frankly appalling, there were too many characters and not enough development other than the teen angst story which wasn't the reason for anyone in the audience being there.

That said, the action sequences were excellent which more than make up for things because that, after all, is what the film was designed for. It also, as is the way with any Summer blockbuster you care to name, left the way open for a sequel.

And from a 24 point of view, Glenn Morshower and Michael O'Neill both appear.

Re: Summer Blockbusters

I just had to check on imdb who michael o'neill was, until i realized it was richard walsh! shame we didn't get to see more of him. speaking of which, maybe we should reactivate (i.e. start) the thread on actors from 24 in other series / movies?... seems to me that 24 has been a stepping stone for many. watching prison break now, (yes, I know I'm way behind, but we are only getting season 1 in switzerland so there's not much I can do... and you'll forgive me, especially steve, for referring to the actors using their character names, but I simply don't know the actors' names), there was Lynn Kresge, there's Eli as a whacko in prison, there's - I'm pretty sure it's him - Robert Ellis, there's the guy who got tortured and killed by Syed Ali - one of Kate Warners' PI's, and from the LOST's pov, there was Hugo, or I'm pretty sure it was him.

and really, it looks like everywhere I turn these days, (ok I don't watch much TV but when I do), there's someone from 24 showing up.

i watched the two bourne movies in the past few weeks as they were on tv. wasn't swept off my feet but they're watchable enough that i think i'll go see bourne ultimatum when it comes to the movie theaters over here.

Re: Summer Blockbusters

OK, having now seen the majority of the big films this Summer- Pirates of the Carribean and Spiderman 3 being the notable absences here are my conclusions.

Die Hard 4.0: Total and utter gung-ho nonsense, in other words, brilliant. This was the ultimate "guy film" that succeeded not only in bringing back everyone's favourite action hero, but also in creating a story where John McClane's old-fashioned hard-handedness was beautifully juxtaposed against the modern technological criminals of today. Again definitely exceeded my expectations, although hopefully they'll stop there as I think attempting a fifth one wouldn't be good.

Harry Potter 5: The best one yet. Incredibly dark and angsty but with enough light-heartedness to give a balance. The young actors are a million times better than their earlier outings- although I'm still not entirely convinced by Emma Watson who tends to overplay a lot of her lines. Some great action sequences and some nice referencing and foreshadowing that reminds the viewer that this is part of a much bigger story.

Shrek 3: Good, but lacked the refinement and panache of it's predecessors. I think the biggest problem is the focus is on the wrong characters. No one really cares about the eponymous hero of the piece, Donkey and Puss are far more interesting but they were left with very little to do. Plus any Monty Python fan must think they've seen all this before given the number of 'borrowed' gags.

Surfs Up: While not technically a big blockbuster, this was actually quite good fun. Definitely a kids film, but it did what it claimed to do and moreso did it well.

Transformers: Once I got past the nauseating and hideously done teenage prom drama of the first hour, this was a surprisingly good yarn. Riddled with more plot holes and naff dialogue than Ben Affleck's CV, but it's impossible not to be entertained by brilliantly renderred CGI robots beating each other up for an intergalactic Rubik's Cube.

The Simpsons Movie: Much better than expected and featuring a good portion of laugh out loud moments. The plot was slightly too political for me- they may as well have gone the whole hog and had a huge banner proclaiming "Save the Planet. Vote Democrat." outside every cinema but otherwise a very good debut to the big screen.

Evan Almighty: Ouch. Anything that succeeds in making both Steve Carrell and John Stewart unfunny and in making Morgan Freeman look like a bad actor deserves to be taken out in front of the Hollywood firing squad. A note to the producers would be, if you want to know how to make Climate change funny watch The Simpsons Movie and take lots of notes.

The Bourne Ultimatum: The thinking person's action film. In some ways this film moved too fast for it's own good, but it was a brilliant ride with terrific sequence after terrific sequence. Dan said in another post that the Bond producer's should take note. I agree, although I think if the could find some middle ground between this and Casino Royale there would be the perfect action movie.

Thanks for reviving this thread steve, now that i've seen all the summer blockbusters that I will, i may as well do the same.

Die Hard 4.0: Total and utter gung-ho nonsense, in other words, brilliant.

Couldn't agree more, although for me it was probably helped that I haven't seen the others on the big screen. A little more brainless than it perhaps should have been given the overall plot points. Fairly good honest fun. Direction could have been a touch better.

Also, I thought it was interesting steve that you made a point of bemoaning earlier that the famous line would probably be in, just as a franchise selling point. But unless i'm crazy, they censored the second part of the line, I guess hoping the audience would finish it off, and be none the wiser, the reason ofcourse is so that they could make a lower certificate. How's that for cynical movie making?

Harry Potter 5: The best one yet. Incredibly dark and angsty but with enough light-heartedness to give a balance.

Yeah, it was the first one I wasn't constantly tracking the plot points and comparing it to the book. It actually made a bigger leap in standard than usual.

Shrek 3: Good, but lacked the refinement and panache of it's predecessors.

....

Surfs Up: While not technically a big blockbuster, this was actually quite good fun.

....

Transformers: Once I got past the nauseating and hideously done teenage prom drama of the first hour, this was a surprisingly good yarn.

Haven't seen any of them, probably won't until DVD/rental.

The Simpsons Movie: Much better than expected and featuring a good portion of laugh out loud moments. The plot was slightly too political for me

I loved it, I don't see how it could have been much better. Now we just need a sequel as good and it can ditch the TV show altogether. More detailed thoughts in the simpsons thread.

Evan Almighty: Ouch. Anything that succeeds in making both Steve Carrell and John Stewart unfunny and in making Morgan Freeman look like a bad actor deserves to be taken out in front of the Hollywood firing squad.

Ouch indeed, got the feeling from the trailer that i'd seen the best jokes.

Again, loved it, my film of the summer, I could watch the waterloo station scene over and over again. No need for them to stop here, roll on no.4. If there's any justice in the world, Paul Greengrass will have his pick of upcoming action flicks. Has Bond 22 got a director yet?

Spiderman 3:
It's too long, it's got too many baddies in it, it repeats itself and previous films too much, too much is laugh out loud funny for all the wrong reasons. And Yet there is a lot to like about the film. It's more out of naviety that it goes wrong than anything else, and so you almost feel sorry for it, as most of the problems probably couldn't have been seen until an almost final cut was assembled. If you did like the first two then you might like this, though it's probably more a rental than a definite buy when the dvd comes around.

Re: Summer Blockbusters

Bourne Ultimatum is a brilliant ilm, the music, the choreography, the storyline, the script, its all good stuf, it would have to be my avourite ilm of the summer as to regards of the fourth book, The Bourne Legacy, i would rather the films are left as a trilogy, for me the ending of ultimatum pretty much brings the ilm full circle, it started in the water for Bourne and it ended with him getting away in the water.

They will be studying the editing in that film or years to come, the way they create suspense with the shots is phenomenal.

Re: Summer Blockbusters

With regards to Die Hard. I'm not sure if they censored the line so much as did some funky sound editing so that it was very very very hard to hear. I could be wrong but there were moments of very dodgy editing where things didn't sync up properly so it may have been one of those.

Re: Summer Blockbusters

Thats a possibility I guess, although that would simply be the how, and it doesn't change the what and why.

Yeah there was some choppy editing in places, I hear there will be an dvd release which is an earlier cut of the film which would have gotten a 15 cert. instead of the 12A. Which I'm quite eager to see if true.

Re: Summer Blockbusters

i think dan you are reffering to the uncut dvd version which is much more suited to Mclanes (sp) speech from 1,2 and 3 and im sure they muffle out the yippe kiya because of the rating, they wanted it to be a 12a rather than a 15, but this should be better on the dvd.
