#1 Re: The Archives of 24 » Season 3 - all episodes » 2007-09-08 16:05:21

I've said elsewhere that I'm actually working my way through season 4 now.  But it's interesting to compare the two seasons, with 3 being relatively fresh in my memory.  One thing I do think is really strong about season 3 is that the threat--this Cordilla virus--remains constant through the whole season (i.e. the whole 24 hours).  Even though the threat builds, and we are pulled & tugged through several variations of who's really behind it, the menace is the same.

I think it's a weakness of season 4 that although the villain is the same the whole way through, there are so many different threats stacked up within hours of each other.  It really does stretch the limits of plausibility.

Hope I haven't violated any spoiler protocol...

#2 Re: The Archives of 24 » Favourite Quotes From Seasons 1-4 » 2007-09-08 16:00:48

I'm now working my way through season 4, and I have to love this quote:

"This will help you with the pain."  >PUNCH TO FACE<  (Jack to Joe Prado after interrogation)

Say what you want about the torture aspect, given that Jack doesn't exactly have a pocket full of vicodin, it actually could be construed as a relatively merciful action!  And of course, we next see Prado in medical getting his fingers set...

I dunno, I guess it's because I just got here, but I don't mind discussing the torture thing...it's interesting to me in a twisted way.  It disturbs me about myself that when I watch Jack or the "good guys" do it and a) it gets results and b) saves some good guys, it kind of reinforces the presumptions that a portion of my countrymen have about torture and why it should perhaps be allowed.

And the thing is, I totally don't agree with that!  But in a fictional universe, I let it slide.  (I've just started watching s. 4, and find it interesting that the first few episodes seem to present a more mixed picture, which is healthy, I think).

I think fiction serves a really useful purpose in the world, where we can explore non-real situations and outcomes and (if we have the presence of mind to reflect on these things) assess our prejudices and reactions accordingly.  I find the torture aspects of 24 very provocative, because I consider myself pretty anti-torture (something along the lines of "Who would Jesus torture?"), and yet am, if not cheering Jack on, at least not leaping out of my chair to defend the baddies' human rights.  If you get what I mean.

Anyway, I do share smitten's curiosity re the choke hold, and also these injectable torture drugs (leave no mark...etc).  Are these in use?  I'm not a chemist or a doctor, but it certainly seems plausible given everything else they can do with drugs these days...

I really liked the way season 3 kicked off.  The only thing that really disappointed me--and which was actually brilliant as a set-up for the surprise later--was that we were dealing with another mole-inside-CTU plot.  I sorta groaned, thinking, you know, we've done this before!  Anyway, brilliant conversion of this later, of course!

#5 Re: The Archives of 24 » Season Three: anyone care to jump in? » 2007-09-01 07:53:16

Well, I guess this is the part where I apologize for jumping to conclusions about the relative popularity of season III.  As  a person who just kinda surfed over here and was checking out the forum boards, there just didn't seem to be a lot of discussion of it compared to I & IV, so I guess I drew the wrong conclusion.  And I can understand where the Almeida fans among you might think III was pretty darn good!

I dunno...I can accept that it's more dramatic for Gael to die in a dark basement, isolated, than in some cushy bed (and then they save on the fake blood too).

I can also accept that we often don't learn much about what makes villains bad, and that Saunders is, in that light, a pretty well-drawn character.  My objection is not to how much we know about Saunders, but that there are at least 3 set-up conversations à la "He was a patriot...he was a good man...something must have happened..." that really give the impression that there's some kind of whalloping gotcha coming about what actually happened to Saunders.  I guess the conversations end with ellipses instead of periods, setting up for a revelation (i.e. not: "Jack left Saunders behind in Bosnia and he was probably tortured within an inch of his sanity.  That's gotta be it.")

I guess this is a pretty trivial nit to pick.  But since I was fairly certain that Jack was gonna save the world tongue, the big suspense bit for me in the last few episodes was getting to find out what turned Saunders bad.

thanks Jackaddict.  Looking at the timestamps of both our posts, it seems we were writing them pretty much simultaneously...so I didn't see anything about s3 in the archive.  Hence the new thread.

I can definitely take my time and chip in as it progresses.  No prob.

Hi all...

I'm new here and there doesn't seem to be much discussion of season 3, perhaps it's not considered top-drawer 24.  But I have two bones to pick (probably trivial) and wondered if anyone else was bothered by this...

1-Gael is dying.  In Pain.  In Agony.  IN A HOTEL.  And they can't give him a room to friggin' lie down in?  NO, he's got to die in the basement with a year's supply of Poland Spring.  Michelle, don't be giving this "he died a hero" crap to poor Mrs Ortega...if you think he's such a hero, give him a pillow, not a gun for pete's sake!!

Am I being naive here?  Is there some national security, tactical reason poor Gael couldn't chill in the honeymoon suite while waiting for his insides to slowly liquefy?

2-What DID Saunders go through in Bosnia?  The whole thing is set up so thickly in the mid-late episodes that it is the biggest letdown ever that he gets wasted by Mrs Ortega without ever getting a monologue to tell us WHY he's doing this.  Pity, because I do think audiences want to like their villains a little...

I wonder if #2 especially is a lead on the reasons folks don't care for season 3 as much.  Anyone wishing to enlighten me further is most welcome.  God only knows how long it'll be before I have time/opportunity to watch Season 4...

cheers!

#8 Re: New in Town » Introduce Yourself » 2007-08-29 22:06:08

well, Hi.  I'm an American with no TV (yes! believe your eyes!) living in Copenhagen.  Every once in a long while I get a chance to watch a season of 24, almost all at once, usually because I'm sick and someone's lent me the DVDs.  Just got finished season 3 (appreciate the no spoiler policy!!) and have questions for other fans.  Hence my arrival here!  Hope someone-anyone-feels like talking about season 3...seems to be somewhat of a drought of conversation on that topic on the forums.

cheers!

PS if you're curious, Season 3 was a tonsillectomy.  Ouch!  sad
