Worth a watch for certain.  Better cast than mine, or maybe it's just that every Brit, no matter how lame, sounds incredibly cool to us boring-@ss Yanks.

One criticism:  When was the last time you saw Jack Bauer go more than a half hour without blowing something up? wink

So whens the much fabled DVD gonna be ready? I've got a space marked out for it on the shelf next to the season box sets and alongside 24: Redemption when that gets released.

The day has arrived!  The DVD is ready!  However, since June, life has happened, and I've run out of funds to replicate a few hundred copies.  What that means for you, the faithful fan...?

I can still send you a the full DVD, in a case, with the insert, etc... but I'll have to burn it on my computer, which means, it might not work if your DVD player is a bit older.  If you have a PS3 or other Blu-Ray player, it works great on those, but in regular DVD players it sometimes struggles.

So let me know, and send me a shipping address if you want.  alan-at-ctuprovo-dot-com.

And the screening at the festival went really well.  All 13 people that showed up loved the movie.  Ah, the life of the struggling indie filmmaker...

With your line of work, you'll surely hope to be seeing more and more of California, no?

Actually, I'm planning on being Utah's Peter Jackson.  No matter what I do, I'll have to spend a certain amount of time in California, but there's a lot of talent here, much more varied geography (meaning better locations) and it's cheaper to shoot here.

What we really lack is infrastructure.  Sound stages, Post facilities, etc...  So, I'm quietly assembling a team that will ensure our future world domination.  Speaking of which, would you guys be interested in helping me land the Captain America movie?  Why dream if you're not going to dream big, right?

Sorry I haven't been on in a while, been directing some commercials, and a short film series for my alma mater.

And finally, CTU:Provo was accepted to the Tacoma Film Festival!  Not a big Fest, by any means, but still, it's the only one we've submitted to yet.  Are there any cool fests out in Great Britain I could submit to?  It'd be great to come out and meet you fine folks.

This is the kind of thing they should have done with Season 6.  Hell, any of the seasons would have benefitted from some prior planning.

#5 Re: Current 24 Debriefs » s7 - virus threat? hmmm..... » 2008-09-16 18:25:25

Agreed, mate.  Nothing I saw there really drew me in, and I couldn't agree more.  I'd like nothing more than to see American Foreign Policy take 2 big steps back.  Not that I think genocide is a good thing, but I'm just not convinced that foreigners, especially Americans, are going to be listened to in the places where those things tend to happen.

On the other hand, I'm holding on to hope.  I really hope that season 7 will knock my socks off.

#6 Re: Current 24 Debriefs » Actors You Wish Got A Better Part On 24? » 2008-06-25 15:02:41

Okay, you might disagree with me on this, but Ricky Schroder's character should have been a more or less 1-to-1 replacement for Roger Cross'es.

But, as was endemic to season 6, everything that could have made the show good was ignored, in favor of some poorly staged action, or some lame-*ss sideplot that neuters a perfectly good villain, and may or may not have killed him!

Sorry, got all season 6 angry again.  Everytime I think about it, I just get steaming mad...  roll

#7 Re: Current 24 Debriefs » CTU: Provo - The Ultimate FanFilm » 2008-06-25 14:52:15

Perhaps get back on topic, Alan, any real chance of a sequel or something in a similar vein atleast targetted at the same audience?

Oh, there's always a chance.  This one is kinda slim though.  Basically, for a sequel to happen, we'd have to have permission from FOX to distribute it, and we'd have to have enough of a budget that I could pay everyone, and we could shoot it like a real movie (meaning, paid crew, all at once, for about 3-4 weeks, not a couple hours every 3rd day for 4 months.)

Don't let that get you discouraged though...  There's bound to be other stuff coming out of the Telekinesis mill soon.  Stay tuned.

On the weather front, you really can't beat Utah. 30 to 35 degrees, no humidity, beautiful thunderstorms for an hour or so in the evening.  cool  It's kinda paradise.  But don't tell anyone else, I don't want this to turn into California2.  Too many people, too much traffic.

Excellent news!  I missed them last year when they were there, and I've been kicking myself ever since.

Think they'd like CTU:Provo? lol

#9 Re: Current 24 Debriefs » CTU: Provo - The Ultimate FanFilm » 2008-06-11 17:07:10

I can manufacture as many as I want, as long as I don't sell them.  I think I can ask people for shipping costs, but that's about it.

What the possibility of manufacture means...  I think I've gotten enough work lately to afford to manufacture them, just out-of-pocket.  The biggest reason we wanted to make the movie in the first place was to have a kick-ass demo reel...

That is all.

Well, I'm back from the honeymoon, it was fantastic, btw.  Cruise on the Mexican Riviera, very nice.

In other, more important news (don't tell my wife I said that,) the documentary is done being edited, we're working on sound now, so the DVD should be ready to go in just a about 2 weeks.  There is a possibility that we're going to be able to manufacture them after all (1,000 anyway) and I'll be sure that you guys each get a copy.  Heck, as many copies as I can get to you.

Also, I'm a little disturbed by 8% of people hating my movie...  Urge to kill, rising... wink

Just pre-ordered the new, all-region DVD set of Spaced.  Comes out July 22nd, and as far as I can tell, it's the first release that's available in the US.  Needless to say, I'm counting down the days.

Also, he was (to the point of being cartoonish) a complete douchebag.  And his train of thought probably went something like this...
"I'm a total an utter douchbag.  What's the douchebaggiest thing I could possibly do at this very moment?"

Voila.  Magnetized media.

#13 Re: Current 24 Debriefs » Direction in 24 » 2008-05-15 00:03:04

Good man!  I freaking LOVE Ed Wright and Simon Pegg.  Though I've yet to see Spaced, it's a bit harder to get ahold of this side of the pond.

I really enjoy both Greengrass' and Mann's work, though they're not in my favorites for the following reasons:
Michael Mann - Miami Vice.  What a blechtacular waste of 2 hours.  But Collateral and Heat are both in my personal top 20.
Greengrass - all of his (admittedly mind-blowingly spectacular) action is actually directed by Dan Bradley, his 2nd Unit Director.  I know that's quite common, but I still prefer the Chris Nolan approach (present for every single frame shot.)

I still haven't gotten into West Wing, though I'd really like to find the time.  I really love a good walk-and-talk.

And yes, J.J. Abrams Lost pilot was probably not only the best fast paced direction in recent times, it may very well be the best episode of television I've ever seen.

While i'm quite observant with these things, i'm sure that there's plenty i've missed, even after two viewings, any plans to record a commentary track, either for any dvd or to simply to download from tehe site?

We've actually already recorded a commentary, Ryan, Charan and I.  There's another one, Joel Hilton, Matt Stringham, and Paul Jefferies making fun of the movie.  Apparently, I was dubbed "Foofy-hair"

Anyway, both commentaries are on the DVD.  We're still trying to determine how to release that.  It was initially created as a Dual-Layer DVD, since we were going to manufacture it, but since we can't now, I may have to break it into 2 discs, so that people can burn them.

Also, I'm still working on getting the http://youtube.com/watch?v=StHsct3pZ-s Documentary done, and that will probably take a few weeks, since I'm getting married on Friday.  But have no fear, as soon as is humanly possible, we'll have some DVD-flavored love for you cats.

#15 Re: Current 24 Debriefs » Direction in 24 » 2008-05-14 22:10:49

While i've got you in a discussion about direction Alan, you got any particular favourite directors? anyone whose style you'd admit to seeing and stealing some ideas from?

Woops, forgot to answer that.
I do have a couple favorite directors, now that you mention it.  Peter Jackson, Stephen Spielberg, and, hear me out, Michael Bay.
Peter Jackson = LotR is the reason I started making movies.  I'd always loved them, and thought, "gee, that'd be fun, maybe."  But watching LotR made me realize just exactly what I loved about movies, and what I wanted to deliver to people:  Worlds and stories and characters so lovingly crafted that they are 100% real.  Every time I watch the Trilogy, I cry, not just because of the incredible acting, and beauty of the films, but because I feel like I'm losing friends, and I can never go to Middle Earth, at least, not in the way they did.
So there's that.
Spielberg = Hello...  Spielberg!  The man can do anything.  Just look at the genres he's either re-defined, or created outright.
And finally...
Michael Bay = Bay teaches me what not to do, and exactly how to do it.  Let me explain.  His movies, though incomprehensible cesspools of putrescent excrement, are really, really exciting.  They're big, flashy, gaudy money-makers.  And while I like to think of myself as an artist, and a thoughtful entertainer, I'm also a businessman.
That's what makes filmmaking so hard.  If you're just an artist, you end up producing beautiful things that no one understands (to me, intellectual masturbation,) if you're a businessman, you produce the same crap that Hollywood studios churn out 100's of per year, and if you're merely an entertainer, pandering to the lowest common denominator, you're Michael Bay.
But if you figure out how to combine all three, you're Jackson, you're Spielberg, you're George Lucas pre-1983, you're Seawright wink

My 2 cents.

kiefer has saved bad writing several times, and so has tony, but I won't go deeper into that now. after all, this should be a directing thread, or so I've gathered

I always have trouble separating the two, since everything but one show I've ever directed, I've had a hand in writing.  In fact, that may be some of the "problem" with television as a storytelling medium, director are almost always kind of divorced from the story, as they're typically just contract workers coming in and shooting a couple shows, then moving on.
Even in cases like Jon Cassar's, where he's a producer of the show, I'm not sure how involved he is in the story creation.
I'll be the first to admit that I'm horribly inexperienced, and don't fully understand the pressure involved in directing episodic content.  But I've worked on enough things, and directed enough other things that I can safely say, I'm not as emotionally connected to material that I haven't helped shape from the beginning.
That being said, I do usually like Turner's episodes better, and there's a reason Cassar's episodes feel like he's getting the job done.  He is getting the job done.  It may not be the prettiest, most imaginative stuff ever, but it gets done.  Also, I have to stick up for his action direction.  He probably directs the best action that's on television currently.

First off, let me explain that the '24' panel at ComicCon last year was right around lunch time, so Cassar smelling like onions probably has a very reasonable explanation...

As for direction in the show...

I'm of the opinion that the direction of the show hasn't really gotten any worse, it's merely moved in a slightly different, er... direction.  For example:
Season 6, episode whatever:  Jack discovers Graem is the bad guy, and he's in town.  He goes to interrogate him.  Incredibly stupid?  Yes.  But look at the direction, the way it's cut, blocked, acted...  There are a whole ton of good pieces in there.  The lesson to learn is, no matter how incredible everyone on a show or a movie is, you can never ever overcome bad writing.

From everything I've heard, and I've actually worked with some people who've been on the show,  they've all said what a great crew it is, how good the directors are, etc...

Granted, the Stephen Hopkins episodes were something special, and you have to hand it to the guy for creating a style that is the most easily recognized on television.

Anyway, give me Brad Turner or Jon Cassar any day of the week.  Especially if you compare him to James Widdoes.

Meanwhile, back on topic, been watching Provo again, caught a joke I didn't hear first time round, at the very beginning, Jono's doing Jack's "i've been awake for 24 hours, i've killed two people since midnight, so purhaps you should be more afraid of me than you are right now." line outside as Alan's waking up. Brilliant.

Thanks, we tried to slip a couple in under the radar like that, just some fun little easter eggs for you.

Reckon you might be able to buy them from somewhere, if Alan gets his login sorted, you can ask him where the shirt came from.

Sorry, the shirts were hand-made by a friend of mine, I think they only printed up about 15 of 'em, and of course, they've all gone to fans and friends here locally.  Otherwise I'd totally hook you up.

And I have to say, Jack Bauer would definitely use a Mac.  He always needs things to work right now!

#20 Re: Current 24 Debriefs » Manny Coto Reveals Prequel Plot *General Spoilers* » 2008-05-13 20:54:00

So, I know it's an old, dead topic, but I thought I'd weigh in.

Seasons 4-6 didn't really need to happen, but we got some good fun out of 4 and 5 at points.
I'm not sure the producers of the show really know what they're doing with it, just the fact that, essentially since season 1, they've been seat-of-their-pants-ing it all the way through (no pre-determined story arc, just making it up as they go along,) tells you a lot.
I'm incredibly dubious about season 7, as season 6 was some of the worst suck that's ever sucked.
The movie should be jolly good fun, but probably won't really do a whole lot character-wise.
Jon Cassar smells like onions. wink

#21 Re: Current 24 Debriefs » CTU: Provo - The Ultimate FanFilm » 2008-05-13 20:32:32

Yeah, exactly, I've got the film burnt to a DVD now and I was gonna show it to my family, who all do watch 24, but i'm not sure if they'll get most of it, my brother might, he after all shouted "what that fatty edgar got a silent clock but tony doesn't?!?!!" after 5-13 while my mum and dad just looked at him like he was crazy.

Let me know how that goes.  We've had some moderate success showing the movie to 24 non-fans, or to casual fans, but most of those people were the friend/relative types.  I've been too busy working on other projects to really set up a "Premiere" with all the trappings.  You know, red carpet, tuxes, fabulously beautiful women, after-parties...

Point is, I'm interested to see the reaction of the common folk to the movie.

And as always, thanks for the support.
